St Austell is best known as home to the Eden Project, Cornwall’s giant biome gardens, and for its china clay mining heritage, which shaped both the local landscape and the local economy for well over two centuries. It’s also home to one of Cornwall’s most famous family breweries – St Austell Brewery. 

Is the Eden Project in St Austell?

The Eden Project sits within the wider St Austell area, a few miles from the town centre in a former china clay pit. It’s usually reached from the A30 and A390 rather than via the town itself.

What are the best things to do in and around St Austell?

The Eden Project is the headline attraction, alongside the Wheal Martyn Clay Works, the Georgian harbour village of Charlestown (a familiar backdrop from Poldark), and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. The town is also home to the St Austell Brewery Visitor Centre. 

Is St Austell good for families?

Yes, there are lots of attractions for families, including the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Wheal Martyn Clay Words and Cornwall FootballGolf. Charlestown’s small, sheltered beach and historic tall ships are also a hit with children.

How long do you need in St Austell?

The Eden Project alone is easily a half or full day given its size. Add Charlestown or Wheal Martyn and it becomes a full day out.

Is there parking in St Austell?

Yes, the Eden Project has extensive dedicated parking for visitors, and the town centre and Charlestown both have pay and display car parks. However Charlestown’s are small and fill quickly in summer.

How far is St Austell from Truro and Liskeard?

St Austell is about 20 minutes’ drive from Truro and around 25 minutes from Liskeard.
