Set within 26 acres of atmospheric historic grounds and woodland near St Austell, Wheal Martyn is a place where industrial heritage and nature come together. Explore two former Victorian clay works bursting at the seams with tools, machinery, artefacts and stories, including Cornwall’s largest working waterwheel. Follow the Historic Trail, venture through the tunnel and discover how clay was once extracted, processed and transported.

With indoor and outdoor spaces, Wheal Martyn is perfect whatever the weather. The Discovery Centre brings the story to life, revealing how the people of Clay Country lived and worked alongside the industry, whilst outdoors the ancient woodland and nature trails are alive with wildlife and provide space for younger visitors to burn off some energy and explore the children’s play area. The Historic Trail and viewing platform over a working clay pit offer modern and historic outlooks, combining together to tell the story of Cornwall’s billion-pound industry.
Our licensed café, set within a former clay works building is the perfect place to refuel, offering delicious homemade cakes, lunches, snacks, local ice cream and beer, whilst our shop is bursting at the seams with unique gifts and souvenirs with many sourced from Cornwall.
