About Wheal Martyn Clay Works

Dig deep and discover the special ingredient in our everyday lives that still shapes Cornwall and our world today – china clay! It hides in your toothpaste, mugs, paper, tyres and even your cosmetics.

A unique indoor and outdoor museum, Wheal Martyn tells the story of Cornwall’s ‘secret’ billion pound industry, and the people who brought it to you, from the heart of Clay Country.

Immerse yourself in the historic grounds of the Victorian clay works, bursting at the seams with tools, machinery, waterwheels, artefacts and stories. Explore woodland trails and green space, let off steam in the play area and discover spectacular views of modern clay mining overlooking the working pit.

An inspiring day out packed with culture, nature and family-friendly fun.

Cornwall Residents Pass

From 1 November 2021 to 31 March 2022, residents of Cornwall can purchase annual admission to Wheal Martyn for a discounted rate of just £8.00 per adult and £5.00 per child (those under 5 go free).

Relaxed Sessions

One day a month, Wheal Martyn encourage quieter activity to provide a suitable environment for those who prefer experiencing the museum at a quieter pace. These sessions are especially suited to people with autism, anxiety and associated conditions, and include fun with object handling, ASD-friendly activities and trails.

"A wonderful few hours at this real treasure. Local history and nature walks combined-something for all the family. Look out for the teddy bears and piskies. Then enjoy a cuppa using the mismatched quirky cups and teapots with a delicious cake too. Can't recommend it enough."
