What is Falmouth known for?

Falmouth is known for being home to the third deepest natural harbour in the world, as well as Pendennis Castle – standing guard at the mouth of the estuary. Steeped in maritime heritage, it’s also a lively university town, with a creative, easygoing feel and lots of independent shops and cafés. 

What are the best things to do in Falmouth?

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, Pendennis Castle, a boat trip out on the Fal, and a wander round the harbour and Custom House Quay are the classics. Falmouth also has several beaches within walking distance of the town centre, as well as Glendurgan and Trebah Gardens nestled on the Helford – about 15 minutes’ drive. 

Is Falmouth good for families?

Yes. The Maritime Museum has plenty of hands-on exhibits for children, Gyllyngvase Beach is sheltered and sandy, and Pendennis Castle’s grounds and ramparts are great for kids to explore.

How long do you need in Falmouth?

A full day comfortably covers the harbour, museum and a beach or two. Add a boat trip up the Fal towards Truro or over to St Mawes and it easily fills two.

Is there parking in Falmouth?

Yes, but the town centre gets busy in peak season. There are pay and display car parks near the seafront and at Events Square, so it’s worth arriving early in summer and on bank holiday weekends.

Is Falmouth a university town?

It is. Falmouth University and part of the University of Exeter are both based here, which gives the town a younger, creative energy and a great spread of independent cafés and galleries.

How far is Falmouth from Truro and Helston?

Falmouth is about 15 minutes’ drive from Truro and around 20 minutes from Helston, making it easy to combine with a Truro shopping trip or a day exploring the Lizard.
