Best Days Out Cornwall

When: 26 August 2024 - 29 August 2024

Jamaica Inn

Posted in Events by cata on 4th February 2024

adapted by Lisa Evans, from the novel by Daphne du Maurier
presented by the Guildburys Theatre Company
26 – 29 August

Daphne Du Maurier’s iconic novel needs no introduction – especially to anyone who lives in or visits Cornwall. The young author made her home in Cornwall and was inspired to write her novel in 1930 after she and a friend became lost in fog whilst out riding on the moors and were led back by their horses to safety at the Inn. During the time spent recovering from her ordeal, the local rector is said to have entertained her with ghost stories and tales of smuggling. Later du Maurier went on to spend a long period at the Inn, furthering her love of the location.

Mary Yellan’s journey across the bleak Bodmin Moor to fulfil her dying mother’s wish that she stays with her Aunt Patience at Jamaica Inn, is the start of a nightmare. Mary finds her Aunt a broken woman, married to the brutish Joss Merlyn. Jamaica Inn exudes a brooding malevolence, drawing Mary unwillingly into the dark deeds of her Uncle Joss and his murderous accomplices as she falls dangerously in love with a man she dares not trust.

Guildburys are delighted to be returning to The Minack to bring to life this classic tale of Cornish Wreckers against the very backdrop in which it takes place.
