New volunteering opportunities at Glendurgan Garden

Posted in News by Lauren Webb on 22nd November 2022

Are you looking for a new challenge in 2023? In preparation for when Glendurgan Garden near Falmouth re-opens to the public on Saturday 11 February 2023, the National Trust property team are looking for new volunteers to help in a variety of engaging and meaningful roles.

There is an opportunity for hands-on Volunteer Gardeners. You’ll assist in making sure that the gardens are maintained to a high standard. You will need to be creative and enthusiastic. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects.

There is also the opportunity to volunteer in charming hamlet of Durgan on the Helford River at the bottom of the garden. Run by a team of over 30 enthusiastic volunteers on a rota basis, the old Fish Cellar is a place to welcome and engage with visitors who stop by for a chat and sell ice cream. This role is a customer facing role, helping tell the story of Glendurgan Garden and the North Helford and what the National Trust looks after.

Another way to get involved is joining the close-knit Glendurgan Teahouse team. Located at the top of the vibrant garden, the role will involve supporting the Food & Beverage team by consistently engaging our visitors with the “Spirit of Glendurgan”, providing a warm welcome and assisting with the bustling operation. It’s a fun, innovative environment and you would become a valued member of the team.

There will be a Volunteer Open Day on Wednesday 1 February 2023 at the garden where there will be the chance to meet staff and volunteers and find out more about the exciting volunteer roles on offer. The day will be split into a morning and afternoon session. Each session includes a guided walk round the garden and places will need to be booked in advance.

The morning session runs from 10am – 12:30pm and the afternoon session from 2 – 4:30pm. If you’d like to attend the Open Day, you can book a place by phoning the property on 01326 252023 or e-mailing [email protected].

Tom Cutter, Assistant Head Gardener, says ‘We’re proud of the team we have here at Glendurgan and the diverse skills and experience we share. Each of us have our own personal areas of interest, yet we’re united by our passion for this special place.’

Glendurgan re-opens to the public on Saturday 11 February 2023 and will then be open from Tuesdays to Sundays, 10.30am to 5.00pm. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/glendurgan
