Hunt for treasure at Charlestown this Easter

Posted in Events, News by cata on 22nd March 2024

The home of Europe’s largest private collection of shipwreck artefacts has two reasons for treasure hunters, young and old, to head to the historic port of Charlestown this Easter.

The award-winning Shipwreck Treasure Museum’s double whammy will see the launch of an exhibition for the 2024 season along with a special Easter egg hunt.

Launching on Good Friday, 29th March, Treasure is a brand-new exhibition that will challenge visitors to the museum’s perception of the meaning of treasure.

The attraction is home to 8000 artefacts recovered from the ocean floor from more than 165 lost vessels. At the heart of the new Treasure exhibition is the world’s only intact barrel of coins that has ever been salvaged from the seabed.

There’s also been a mutiny at the museum this Easter. A crew of cheeky pirate bunnies have stolen the Easter Bunny’s treasure. Running from Good Friday until Sunday 14th April younger guests will be challenged to hunt down the lost treasure throughout the museum and tunnels that lay beneath it.

Lynné Raubenheimer, Visitor Engagement Manager at the Shipwreck Treasure Museum, said:

“Our new exhibition, Treasure, will make our visitors explore how they define treasure. Is it the classic shiny goody with a financial value, or an artefact that embodies a long-lost era or perhaps something that tells a story about how life was once lived? It is a very personal decision, and we like to use our amazing collection to make our guests think.

“We’ll also be staging our very own Easter trail. We look forward to children visiting and grabbing a treasure map to find the Easter Bunny’s loot within the attraction. It’ll be great fun and there will be a special sweet treat to reward those who take part.”

The Treasure exhibition is included in museum admission and the Easter trail activity is included in joint ticket purchases.
