As International Women’s Day – 8th March 2025 – approaches, this is a perfect time to visit The Story of Emily to celebrate Emily Hobhouse’s heroism and to hear her untold story.
Emily’s mission was as a whistleblower, pacifist and activist who stood up against the Empire to alleviate suffering in British concentration camps during the Anglo-Boer war. To this day, Emily is hailed a hero in South Africa, but her story has largely remained overlooked in the UK. That’s until now. The Story of Emily is an exciting new cultural space which brings Emily’s tale of female courage and determination to life.
Visitors can step back in time while visiting the Victorian Rectory; the beautifully restored childhood home of Emily Hobhouse, before taking an immersive storytelling tour of the War Rooms where they honour the extraordinary impact Emily had on events in the Anglo-Boer War.. This is an impressive, masterfully crafted journey that vividly recounts the perils of the Anglo-Boer War and Emily’s impact in saving lives.
A trip isn’t complete without a visit to The Story of Emily Restaurant, a beautiful, elegant and light-filled space serving delicious traditional 19th-century South African dishes and flavours, sourced from local kitchen garden produce. The Story of Emily are pleased to announce that Annual Pass Holders and Neighbour Pass holders can bring up to four guests to dine in the Restaurant without paying an admission fee.
