Best Days Out Cornwall

Introducing ‘Releaseathon’

Posted in News by Eve Butler on 1st April 2025

This year sees The National Lobster Hatchery celebrate a milestone twenty-five years since its
grand opening which took place on 20th October 2000.

The pioneering conservation charity
located in Padstow may be small, but it packs a punch way above its size as one of the leading
stock enhancement organisations globally.

To celebrate this huge milestone and showcase their work the team will embark on ‘The
Releasathon’ – an epic 25-day challenge to carry out 25 lobster releases in 25 locations over 25
consecutive days around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“Reaching the 25th anniversary of the National Lobster Hatchery is testament to the incredible
commitment and hard work of all the staff, volunteers and Board of Trustees, past and present,
over the last two and a half decades. The Charity’s journey has been far from easy, but central to
its work has been the production of baby lobsters every year since 2000 for release into the sea,
often produced and released against all the odds, The Releaseathon is a fitting way to celebrate
the journey so far” Eddy Derriman MBE, Founder The National Lobster Hatchery.

This target, although ambitious, will include collaborations with many of the people and
organisation’s that have supported the charity over the past two and a half decades.
Lobster logistics are already well under way, with the charity’s fisher network hard at work
catching egg bearing lobsters ready to hatch, and the NLH team using their expertise to nurture
the lobsters and assess the best locations, coordinate boats, divers, tides and teams.
The challenge kicks off on the Isles of Scilly on 19th May. To keep up to date with all things
Releasathon follow the journey via their social media platforms.
